Putting an Art Show Together: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Barrio Collective

As an immigrant artist living in New York City, finding adequate space to showcase your art is a rarity. But what happens when you and a group of like-minded artists come together to create a collective that celebrates your unique artistic expressions? That's where the Barrio Collective comes in.

For the Noche de Galeria event, we had the pleasure of partnering with Estudio, a gallery founded by Jennifer and Julio Candelario in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Like us, Jennifer and Julio are also artists who come from immigrant backgrounds and were the perfect hosts for the event. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to them for providing us with the space to showcase the Barrio Collective artwork and share our stories with the community.

The Barrio Collective was created with the intention of connecting immigrant artists to the art community of New York. Our aim is to establish a space where we can share our artwork, collaborate with other artists, and engage with the community. One of the ways we do this is by putting on art shows, which serve as a platform for us to showcase our work to a wider audience.

So, what goes into putting an art show together? Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the process:

  1. Conceptualization and planning: The first step is to conceptualize the show's theme and plan out its logistics. This includes deciding on the artwork to be displayed, the venue, the date, and time of the show, and any additional events or activities that will be incorporated into the show.

  2. Curating the artwork: Once the planning is complete, the next step is to curate the artwork that will be displayed. This involves selecting pieces that align with the show's theme and represent the unique artistic expressions of the collective's artists.

  3. Preparing the artwork: After curating the artwork, the next step is to prepare it for display. This involves framing or mounting the artwork, labeling it with the artist's name and title of the piece, and ensuring that it is transported safely to the venue.

  4. Setting up the show: On the day of the show, the collective members come together to set up the display. This includes arranging the artwork in an aesthetically pleasing way, setting up any additional decorations or props, and ensuring that the venue is conducive to the show's overall vibe.

  5. Hosting the show: Finally, it's time to host the show! This involves engaging with the audience, answering any questions they may have, and promoting the collective's work. It's also a chance for the artists to connect with potential buyers and collectors, network with other artists, and engage with the community.

Putting on an art show is a collaborative effort that requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and creativity. But the end result is worth it, as it serves as a platform for the collective to showcase their unique artistic expressions to a wider audience.

At the Barrio Collective, we are committed to creating a space where immigrant artists can come together to celebrate their creativity and unique experiences. By hosting art shows and other events, we hope to continue to connect with the art community of New York and beyond.
